What happens when I visit the site?

Hosting provider and server log

The website runs at netzlaboranten GmbH, Cranachstraße 2, 35396 Gießen. The hosting provider processes data on our behalf and according to our instructions; a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR is in place for this.

With every request, the server writes a line to its log: IP address, date and time, requested address, status code, amount of data, referrer (if your browser sends one) and browser identifier (user agent). This is technically necessary to deliver the site and to detect errors and attacks (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). We do not combine this data with other sources.

At the hosting provider, the logs with IP addresses are kept in archives. At present these are the logs of roughly the last nine months (as of October 2026). The hosting provider sets the deletion period. We are checking with the hosting provider whether the retention can be shortened.

On our side: a script reads the log once a day directly on the server and discards the IP address while doing so. We do not download any logs. From this a daily report is produced for the operator (Guido Mitschke): totals, bot numbers, shortened browser identifiers of unknown bots and addresses of pages not found. It contains no IP addresses. The reports stay in the operator's mailbox until they are deleted. We do not build visitor profiles from them (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR: detecting errors, stable operation).

Cookies and third-party servers

We do not set any cookies. Only if you yourself switch between light and dark appearance does your browser remember the choice locally (“til-theme” in local storage). This happens only after your click, is not transmitted to us and can be deleted at any time.

Fonts, images and scripts are on our own server. Nothing is loaded from third parties. The connection is encrypted with HTTPS. For links to other websites, their privacy policy applies.

How do you count visitors? (reach counter, Reichweitenzähler)

We want to know which pages are read and whether visitors get in touch, in order to improve our content (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). For this we run a simple reach counter of our own on our server, without third-party providers. It stores nothing in your browser.

Only totals per day are counted: which page was requested, which website you came from (only the name, such as “google”), roughly the country, region and city, device type, operating system and browser (family only), whether a bot made the request, and how often buttons were clicked or forms were submitted.

Not stored: your IP address, the user agent, a visitor ID or a fingerprint. We do not recognise you again and do not track which pages a person visits in succession.

The counter determines the location briefly in working memory from your IP address, using a database on our server, and discards the address immediately. Only the count is stored, for example “Germany, Hamburg: 8”. The location may be wrong. The database is “IP to City Lite” from DB-IP (IP Geolocation by DB-IP, licence CC BY 4.0). The counting files are kept at the hosting provider, are not transferred to third countries and are kept for 14 months at most. The request to the counter appears in the server log like any other request.

Objection: you do not have to click anything. If your browser sends “Global Privacy Control” or “Do Not Track”, we do not count your visit and do not determine a location either. You can also object to the counting at any time by email to info@todayislife.de (Art. 21 GDPR).

In addition, we use the webmaster tools of Google (Search Console) and Microsoft (Bing Webmaster Tools). There we receive only totals on search queries and retrieval errors. We do not pass visitor data of this website on to Google or Microsoft.

What happens to my details in forms and emails?

The contact form and the workshop form send your details as an email to info@todayislife.de (sent via our hosting provider's mail server). The website has no database for this. We ask for your name and email address, your enquiry or message and, for workshop registration, focus, number of participants and preferred location; company, phone number and preferred date are optional. We do not store your IP address for this. To prevent misuse there is a daily limit that counts only messages, not people.

We use the details only to answer your enquiry and do not pass them on to third parties unless we are legally required to or you have consented. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where a contract is involved, otherwise our legitimate interest in handling enquiries (point (f)). We keep your email for up to two years after the enquiry is closed and delete or anonymise it after that; you can request earlier deletion. Statutory retention periods remain unaffected.

The same applies to ordinary emails and calls. Emails are not encrypted all the way on their journey, so please do not send us sensitive data such as health data.

What rights do I have?

You have the right of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and objection to processing based on our legitimate interest (Art. 21 GDPR). To exercise them, write to us informally at info@todayislife.de. If we have justified doubts about your identity, we will ask for additional information. We reply without undue delay and at the latest within one month. We keep requests concerning your data protection rights for 3 years after they are closed.

You can also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. The authority responsible for us is the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (Hamburgische Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit), datenschutz-hamburg.de.
