The company was founded in 1994 by Guido Mitschke and is now our subsidiary and partner for business intelligence in healthcare. In substance, Transact has stood for decades for business intelligence in healthcare, for difficult data sources, connectors and software that is really used in hospitals.

More than a hundred years ago, Codman asked a question that sounds astonishingly modern: what actually became of our patients? He wanted to record outcomes systematically, compare them and learn from them. In doing so he anticipated a basic idea of today’s hospital BI: not just collecting and billing data, but using it to improve quality and decisions. Different technology. The same idea: a hospital gets better when it learns from its own data.

Transact is a company in its own right, with a pretty long history
Transact was founded in 1994 by Guido Mitschke and is now our subsidiary and partner for business intelligence in healthcare. So for us Transact is not just some external BI partner we brought in at some point. The company belongs to the history of this house.
And that history lies quite clearly in healthcare.
Transact has worked for decades with data from hospitals, with medical controlling, with operating theatre processes, with quality data and with the not particularly glamorous parts of business intelligence: interfaces, data sources, connectors, domain logic and the question of how a reliable evaluation can come out of very different systems in the first place.
That is exactly the point that matters to us about Transact. Not the nice promise of BI. But the experience with the part before it.
The company knows the reality in which hospital BI is created
In healthcare, the crucial information is almost never in one place. Hospital information systems, operating theatre systems, staff planning, billing, financial data, quality data, Excel files, exports and historically grown side systems all talk to each other a little differently. If at all.
Transact works in healthcare, in research and in other companies, too. For over 30 years, analyses and reports have been created there from very different data sources.
Anyone who has worked with real source systems for long enough knows pretty well that BI rarely fails at the dashboard. It fails before that.
Namely when the data exists somewhere, but nobody can say exactly what it means, how it fits together or why the same key figure gives three different values in three systems.
The products are built on that
On this basis, Transact develops concrete products for healthcare. They include DRG-View for medical controlling, OP-View for analysing operating theatre processes and Q.B.X. for analyses based on the official quality reports of German hospitals.
On top of that comes the connection of very different source systems. Connectors for hospital information systems (KIS), SAP, rota systems, CSV files, §21 data and other sources are the core of the work there, not a side issue.
Qlik is part of it, too. Transact has been a Qlik partner for almost 20 years and supports customers both on-premise and in the cloud.
For us, though, that is not the actual core of the company.
The core is that Transact has understood how many difficult data sources become a model on which you can analyse sensibly at all. In the end that matters much more than the question of which logo the visualisation is later delivered under.
Why this matters for Today is Life
Today is Life now bundles several topics: AI, BI, HI and SI. Within that, Transact stands for a part of the story that began long before the current AI hype.
When we talk about data, models, AI and new systems today, underneath it there is not only theory but also a company that has been dealing with the practical reality of business intelligence since 1994.
Transact therefore doesn’t belong at the edge but right in the middle.
